Ammo storage
Modern smokeless ammunition stored cool, dry and sealed lasts decades. Stored in a humid garage in a cardboard box, it can be compromised in a couple of seasons.
Three things degrade ammunition: moisture reaching the propellant or primer, sustained heat accelerating propellant breakdown, and temperature cycling that pumps humid air past an imperfect seal. Sealing and stable temperature address all three.
What actually matters
- The gasket is the whole product. A surplus steel can with a hardened, cracked gasket seals nothing. Inspect the rubber, replace it if it has taken a set, and test the seal — a properly sealed can resists the lid closing on trapped air.
- Desiccant, and a way to know it's working. Rechargeable silica gel packs are cheap. A small hygrometer in the can is what turns hope into knowledge. Under 50% relative humidity is a sensible target.
- Interior beats garage, always. A conditioned closet at stable room temperature beats an uninsulated garage or attic by a wide margin, mostly because of temperature cycling rather than peak heat.
- Label with date and lot. Rotate oldest first, and record the lot. If you ever chase a pressure or ignition problem, lot tracking is the difference between diagnosing it and guessing.
- Watch for verdigris and setback. Green corrosion at the case mouth or a bullet that has been pushed deeper by repeated chambering are both reasons to pull that round out of service.
