Red dot footprints

More money is wasted on incompatible optic-to-slide pairings than on any other single mistake in the accessory market. It's entirely avoidable.

A footprint is the pattern of mounting screw holes and recoil lugs on the base of a reflex sight, and the matching cut in your slide. There are several incompatible standards in common use, they look broadly similar in photographs, and the names on the box rarely tell you which one you're getting.

Find out what your slide is cut for

Before shopping, establish this with certainty. Sources, in order of reliability:

  • The manufacturer's specification for your exact model and generation. Not a forum post — the maker's own documentation.
  • The adapter plate that shipped with the pistol, if it came optics-ready. The plate is usually stamped or documented with the footprint it serves.
  • Direct measurement of screw hole spacing and lug positions against a published pattern diagram, if the documentation is genuinely unavailable.

Optics-ready pistols frequently ship with several plates covering several footprints. Which plate you have determines what will bolt on, and plates are not interchangeable between pistol models even when they serve the same optic footprint.

The patterns you'll encounter

The commonly encountered families include the Trijicon RMR pattern, the Shield RMSc pattern used widely on slim and micro-compact slides, the Docter/Noblex pattern, Aimpoint's ACRO, Leupold's DeltaPoint Pro, and Holosun's K-series and C-series patterns. Several manufacturers deliberately build to another company's footprint to access its mounting ecosystem, which is helpful — but a given model line may offer variants on different footprints, and patterns get revised.

Because of that, treat any list of "which optic uses which footprint" — including this paragraph — as a starting point rather than an authority. Confirm against the optic manufacturer's current published specification for the exact model number you intend to buy. That is the only source that stays correct.

Similar names, different footprints. Manufacturers routinely sell closely named models on incompatible patterns — a full-size and a compact version of the same product line frequently do not share a footprint. Buy on the model number and the published spec, never on the family name.

Direct mount beats an adapter plate

Where you have the choice, mount the optic directly to the slide cut rather than through a plate. Every plate adds:

  • Height. The optic sits further from the bore, which raises mechanical offset and can push the dot above suppressor-height irons you intended to co-witness.
  • A second set of screws. Two more fasteners that can loosen under recoil, and a second interface that can shift.
  • A compliance layer. Any flex between plate and slide shows up as a shifting zero.

Plates are perfectly serviceable when properly torqued and thread-locked. They just aren't free.

Bigger dots are faster to find under stress and easier to track in recoil. Smaller dots are more precise at distance. Three MOA is where most defensive pistol optics land for good reason.

If you have astigmatism, the dot may appear as a smear, starburst or comma rather than a circle. This is your eye, not the optic — and it's why some shooters with astigmatism prefer a larger dot or a reticle with a surrounding circle, which reads more clearly than a smeared point. Try before you commit if you can.

Open versus closed emitter

An open emitter — the classic RMR silhouette — fires its LED across an exposed gap to the lens. That gap can collect rain, snow, lint, mud or blood, and when it does the dot dims or vanishes. A closed emitter seals the optical path inside the housing. It is bulkier, heavier and more expensive, and it is the right choice for duty, weather, and anything you genuinely depend on.

Battery access and runtime

Bottom-load optics require dismounting to change the battery, which means re-zeroing — or at least confirming zero — every time. Top or side load lets you swap in place. Given that batteries are the most common point of failure, this is worth paying attention to.

Quoted runtimes of tens of thousands of hours assume a low or mid brightness setting. Daylight-bright settings drain far faster. Optics with shake-awake or ambient light sensing extend real-world life considerably. Whatever you buy, change the battery on a calendar schedule rather than waiting for it to fail.

Mounting properly

  • Degrease the slide cut and the optic base.
  • Use the screws supplied with the optic, at the length specified. Too long bottoms out and cracks the housing; too short strips the threads.
  • Apply the manufacturer's specified thread locker — usually a medium-strength formulation.
  • Torque with an inch-pound driver to spec.
  • Re-check after the first hundred rounds, and periodically after.
