Read the marking

The threat at a range is not a bullet. It is ejected brass, jacket fragments bounced back off steel, unburned powder and hot gas — and the standard stamped on the frame is the entire point of the purchase.

Ordinary sunglasses are not eye protection. They are a lens in a frame, untested against impact, and they will shatter into the thing they were supposed to protect. The distinction between eyewear and protective eyewear is a documented test, and that test is recorded as a marking on the product.

ANSI/ISEA Z87.1

The US civilian occupational standard for eye and face protection. It covers impact, optical quality, and optional ratings for splash, dust and radiation. For shooting, impact is what matters.

Two impact levels exist:

  • Z87 — basic impact.
  • Z87+ — high impact. This is the one you want, and the plus symbol is the difference.

The high-impact rating involves two tests. A high-mass test drops a pointed projectile of roughly 500 grams from a height of about 50 inches onto the lens. A high-velocity test fires a quarter-inch steel ball at approximately 150 feet per second at multiple impact points. To pass, the lens must not fracture, and no part may detach from the eye-side of the frame.

The marking must be physically on the product — on the frame, and on the lens itself. Both should carry the manufacturer's mark and Z87+ if it is rated. A claim on the packaging or in a product listing with no marking on the item is not a certification.

Check the lens, not just the frame. Interchangeable-lens systems sometimes ship a Z87+ frame with lenses of varying ratings. Each lens should carry its own marking. If a replacement lens is unmarked, it has not been rated.

Military ballistic standards

MIL-PRF-32432 is the current US military performance specification for ballistic eye protection, superseding MIL-PRF-31013 for spectacles. It tests against a fragment-simulating projectile rather than a steel ball, at substantially higher velocity than Z87.1 requires — spectacles are tested with a small calibre fragment simulator at velocities several times the Z87.1 high-velocity test, and goggles to a higher threshold again.

The US Army maintains an Authorized Protective Eyewear List of products meeting these requirements. Eyewear on that list has met a genuinely demanding ballistic standard, and a number of listed products are sold commercially.

For range use, Z87+ is a sound bar. If you shoot a lot of steel, run rifles at close distance, or simply want more margin, APEL-listed eyewear is a meaningful upgrade rather than a marketing one.

Coverage and fit

The standard describes the lens. Coverage describes whether the threat reaches your eye around it.

  • Wraparound geometry. Brass arrives from the side — especially on a crowded line with a shooter to your right. Flat lenses with gaps at the temples leave an open path.
  • Close fit to the brow. A gap above the lens lets fragments and gas in from above, which is the common path for a ricochet off an overhead baffle at an indoor range.
  • Thin temple arms if you wear muffs. Standard thick arms break the sealing surface of an earmuff cup and cost you real hearing attenuation. Flat, thin arms designed for use under muffs solve this and are worth seeking out.
  • Prescription wearers should use Z87-rated over-spectacles or a frame with an Rx insert carrier. Ordinary prescription lenses are not impact-rated, and assuming they will hold is a bad bet.

An interchangeable-lens kit is usually better value than three separate pairs, provided every lens in it carries its own marking.

One caution on polarised lenses: they cut glare effectively, but they also suppress mirage. If you read wind by watching mirage through a spotting scope or a rifle optic, polarisation removes information you are actively using. Many precision shooters avoid it for that reason.

Anti-fog is a safety specification

A fogged lens gets lifted, and a lifted lens protects nothing. This is not a comfort feature — it is the difference between eyewear you keep on and eyewear you take off at the worst moment.

Look for a genuine applied anti-fog coating rather than a claim, and for frame venting if you shoot in heat, move between temperatures, or wear a face covering. Treat anti-fog coatings gently: many are damaged by dry-wiping with a shirt, which is exactly what everyone does. Rinse, then dry with a clean microfibre.

Replace them

Polycarbonate degrades. Scratches concentrate stress and reduce impact resistance, UV exposure embrittles the material over years, and any lens that has actually taken a strike should be replaced immediately regardless of how it looks. Eye protection is cheap relative to what it protects, and there is no argument for running a scratched, hazed lens because it still technically has a Z87+ stamp on it.
